We spend a lot of money on health care in the United States, and the Fortune 500 reflects this, with 45 Health Care companies on the list.

Many are household names, such as CVS (#4), UnitedHealth (#5), McKesson (#7), Cigna (#13), Johnson & Johnson (#36), Humana (#41), Merck(#65), Bristol-Myers Squibb (#75) and Pfizer (#77).

Four have female CEOs. Topping the list is Karen Lynch, CEO of CVS Health, with 256,000 employees. Lynch is also the first female CEO of a Fortune 10 company.  Anthem (#23) – a Fortune 50 company that includes for-profit Blue Cross Blue Shield, pharmacy benefits, and Medicare & Medicaid managed care – is headed by Gail Boudreaux.

Kristin Peck was appointed CEO of Zoetis – the world’s leading animal health company – in 2020 (#431). Reshma Kewalramani was also appointed CEO in 2020, of Boston-based Vertex Pharmaceuticals (#448), making Kewalramani the first female CEO to head a US biotech at this level.
